MEL OGDEN

Mel Ogden is trained in the arts as a sculptor rather than coming from a horticultural or landscape design background. The fundamental considerations of sculpture such as scale, form and composition, along with a passion for trees, all inform her practice of making landscape spaces.

Mel conducts her sole practice from her rural property at Lyonville, Central Victoria, which she is currently developing as a collection of spaces based on experiences of landscape. Each space is designed to have a specific sensibility while taking into account the relationship of the work to the site and adjacent planting through the seasons.  Pattern, rhythm, movement, mass plantings, simplicity of form and the constancy of change are principles underlying this project, whilst also providing the guiding philosophies of her work elsewhere.  Mel’s commissions are predominantly residential projects in urban and regional areas throughout south eastern Australia.

A collaborative residential conversion of the Glenlyon Church and surrounding garden (in conjunction with Multiplicity, Architects) received the International Design Excellence Award - Overall Winner in 2005.
