Kevin Heinze Garden Centre
Our service, which opened in 1979, was based on an innovative idea of Kevin Heinze that people of all abilities should have access to the benefits of a garden. It seems a bit self-evident now, but as our society had gone through a post war change, people moved to industry, technology and commercialisation. This locked many out of contact with the natural world. Kevin was passionate about green spaces being places of equity; there is no hierarchy in a garden, everyone works together, it is very equitable.
The Centre’s inclusive philosophy has seen many marginalised individuals and groups attend over the last thirty one years; we are unique in providing gardening opportunities for adults and children together; for people with physical and intellectual disability, acquired brain injury and mental health issues. We also train students with disability in accredited horticulture certificate courses. We are an independent charity, which gives us the flexibility to respond to the needs of marginalised people and work with them in a meaningful way. We are brilliantly supported by around 70 down to earth, energetic volunteers who support adults and children in garden activities in an open minded and relaxed way.
And we believe in having fun!
